Walgreens To Start Deliveries By Drone

In partnership with Wing Aviation, an Alphabet company, Walgreens is launching door-to-door delivery of retail products by drone.

Health and wellness, food and beverage and convenience items will be delivered from the retailer to customers in Christiansburg, Virginia, by Wing, the first drone operator certified as an air carrier by the Federal Aviation Administration earlier this year.

The pilot program involves delivering products minutes after placing orders via the Wing mobile app, according to the program announcement by Walgreens.

More than 100 products and six pre-built “packs” in categories including allergy, first aid, baby and kids’ snacks can be selected for delivery.

For example, those with a common cold could order the cough/cold pack containing a variety of cough and cold products.

The pilot program is being conducted as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot Program, according to Wing. It is being billed as the most advanced drone delivery trial in the U.S. to date.

Eligible FedEx Express customers in the designated delivery zones can opt in to the drone delivery service.

Wing designed a customized box for products to be delivered.

Deliveries of things in automated vehicles are much more likely take off ahead of people riding in autonomous vehicles.
